Figure Number Page 1.1 CT scans (axial view) and liver segmentation. The first column shows the CT scans and the second column shows the corresponding ground truth liver segmentation.. 2.2 A set of training CT volumes. The colors represent the intensity values in the CT volumes. The shape of an organ is represented by a triangular mesh model. A triangular mesh that contains three vertex points, P 1 , P 2 and P 3 , is drawn in each organ. For each vertex point, an arrow is drawn to represent its normal vector and a 3D box represents its intensity profile. We use different sizes and colors to indicate the variations in sizes and intensities of organs.. . 7 2.3 3D point correspondence. Points in the same color indicate they are corre-2.4 Learning a statistical shape model. A triangle represents a training shape and the mean shape of all the training shapes is drawn with a diamond shape. Here we assume that we learn a linear model (e. 2.5 Learning a boundary intensity model. A simple histogram model indicates the probability of a point belonging to the boundary given its intensity profile. 9 iv 2.7 Boundary refinement.(a) For a vertex point, we draw its normal vector as a red arrow and the search range as a violet box. The learned boundary intensity model is used to estimate the refinement (e.g., estimating a displacement vector for each vertex point in the search range or the violet box of the current vertex point).(b) After the displacement for each vertex point is estimated, we can get an updated shape. (c) The updated shape is shown in the shape space as a blue square. (d) The closest shape to the updated shape (the blue square) on the statistical shape model (the dotted line) is drawn as the green circle. (e) The closest shape is put in the CT volume. (f) The initial shape is replaced with the (closest) shape and the process (steps a-f) is repeated.

A universal approach for automatic organ segmentations on 3D CT images based on organ localization and 3D GrabCut

This paper describes a universal approach to automatic segmentation of different internal organ and tissue regions in three-dimensional (3D) computerized tomography (CT) scans. The proposed approach combines object localization, a probabilistic atlas, and 3D GrabCut techniques to achieve automatic and quick segmentation. The proposed method first detects a tight 3D bounding box that contains th...

Prostate segmentation and lesions classification in CT images using Mask R-CNN

Purpose: Non-cancerous prostate lesions such as prostate calcification, prostate enlargement, and prostate inflammation cause too many problems for men’s health. This research proposes a novel approach, a combination of image processing techniques and deep learning methods for classification and segmentation of the prostate in CT-scan images by considering the experienced physicians’ reports. ...

SCAN: Structure Correcting Adversarial Network for Chest X-rays Organ Segmentation

Chest X-ray (CXR) is one of the most commonly prescribed medical imaging procedures, often with over 2– 10x more scans than other imaging modalities such as MRI, CT scan, and PET scans. These voluminous CXR scans place significant workloads on radiologists and medical practitioners. Organ segmentation is a crucial step to obtain effective computer-aided detection on CXR. In this work, we propos...

Automatic localization of solid organs on 3D CT images by a collaborative majority voting decision based on ensemble learning

PURPOSE Organ segmentation is an essential step in the development of computer-aided diagnosis/surgery systems based on computed tomography (CT) images. A universal segmentation approach/scheme that can adapt to different organ segmentations can substantially increase the efficiency and robustness of such computer-aided systems. However, this is a very challenging problem. An initial determinat...

Rule-Based Ventral Cavity Multi-organ Automatic Segmentation in CT Scans

We describe a new method for the automatic segmentation of multiple organs of the ventral cavity in CT scans. The method is based on a set of rules that determine the order in which the organs are isolated and segmented, from the simplest one to the most difficult one. First, the body is isolated from the background. Second, the trachea and the left and right lungs are segmented based on their ...
